CKEditor 3.0 is here!

After almost two years of intensive development, it's a pleasure to release the first stable version of CKEditor 3.0, our next generation browser based WYSIWYG editor. This is the next big thing following the birth of CKSource.

CKEditor is a complete rewrite of our so loved FCKeditor, which got a bit old after six years of great success. Not to say that FCKeditor is doing bad, but there are some new things we could bring to it, and CKEditor is the result of it. I'm sure you will feel the difference, and if you were happy with FCKeditor, you'll be now amazed with CKEditor.

CKEditor has also a new logo and a new web site. We really hope you'll enjoy it.

What's new?

There are dozens of new features in CKEditor. Let's talk about some of the most notable things.

Amazing performance!

Yeah... that's really a big difference. CKEditor is fast to load and fast to use. Our development team stayed focused to bring here the best performance you can have, using all modern best practices. You'll be amazed with it.

Accessibility

Another important aspect on totally rewriting the code is that CKEditor is now fully accessible. It's totally screen reader compatible and keyboard only usable. It complies with the W3C WCAG and the US Section 508 accessibility standards. It also offers a unique high contrast feature. CKEditor is here for everybody.

Brand new UI

You'll note that we have also a brand new UI based on the Kama skin. Other than modern, Kama is colorful like a chameleon, so you can precisely match its color to your needs. This is an innovative and unique feature you'll find in CKEditor only.

New JavaScript API

The CKEditor code is also much different now. It's up to date with the new JavaScript development requirements, offering a rich and powerful integration and interaction API. The editor is totally plugin based, and it can be extended and modified in all senses to fit all needs.

Notes on the new name

For years we have been fighting with a relatively important issue with FCKeditor. While its quality has been strongly accepted, its name brought us troubles, mainly inside English speaking countries. The fact is that the initials of Frederico Caldeira Knabben have an unfortunate match with the most used English bad word.

We hope you like the new CKEditor name. It's the best solution we have found to make the transition clearer and better acceptable. Note that CK stands now for "content and knowledge".

So go ahead expressing yourself with our new editor, bringing exciting new features to your applications and web sites.

no way i can upgrade all my projects to ckeditor if there is not image uploader included. 90% of all applications require image and/or file upload. and before i start paying for this, i rather use the good old fckeditor where the filemanager was free.

CKeditor in Model box popup

I have migrated from FCKeditor to CKeditor, but i found the CKEditor is not working on Model box popup. While the FCKeitor was working. Is any body have an idea how can we display it in model box popup. I trided the php code and js replace text area both but none of them is work. Please replay me if you knows teh solution.

Header and Footer Integretion

Hey all.

Its a gr8 editor but i was wondering as to how can we dynamically inlucde header and footer in the html.

Also, how can we make the editor use the maximum of the page while printing....i can see a lot of blank spaces in the end of text and the default footer(for ex URL etc, page num etc).How can i reduce it; please can anyone help me out?

3.x zips only have php - what happened to asp examples?

The new 3.x versions don't seem to have the classic asp examples.

Why is that? I would just use the old version but I don't see DIVs in tables .. the editor isn't really showing what is in the html.

Do you have the 3.x, with asp examples?

you should download ckfinder to see upload images option and use it in pages with path.it will solve the problem.

Word Wrap

I am using the CKEditor but I can not find the Word Wrap option. So when i am typing a word with a guge no of characters, the horizontal scroll bar is appearing. Can anybody suggest me how i solve it?

I had the same problem when I first installed ckeditor. I have figured out that if you select align (either left or right) from the image button - the text will then wrap around the image.

Just reiterating some of the views above.

The visual design of ck editor is absolutely terrible. All those mismatched colour's look highly unprofessional. Even in this editor that i am using now the buttons look grainy and blurry. I have looked at this editor on a number of screens and it all looks terrible.

The editor itself should not have padding or rounded corners. For in place editing you want the editor to blend as seemlessly as possible.

The final problem is the fact that there is not image browser. I have not used fckeditor, but from what i have heard it does include an image browser. You guys are pulling the same dirty trick that the tinymce guys use. You show the demo version with the paid inage browser, a user downloads and installes the software only to find that the image browser is actually a paid add on. I am not saying that you do not have a right to sell your software, im just saying don't waste my time and everyone elses time by making it seem the the image browser comes built into the editor.

I would be better to have skin like Office 2010

Andrew, thanks for your feedback, and I'm sorry to hear that CKEditor didn't match your expectations. Fortunately the great majority of our users have a different opinion about it, but be sure that we take all suggestions in consideration.

If the default Kama skin is not for you, be sure to check the other skin options. We'll also bring further skins in the future, to satisfy all tastes.

Regarding CKFinder in the demo, we'll add information into that page about it.

Browse Server button

We have been using FCKEditor so far and were thinking of upgrading to and using CKEditor, since the new editor looks much more cleaner with the new skins and definitely faster.

The latest CKEditor i downloaded does not seem to have the "Browse Server" button available in the image upload dialog. I looked up the forums, and they say the uploading support is available on V3 RC. What and where could i get this V3 RC?

Also, the FCKEditor had a separate folder download with the ASP .NET project code which we had to alter to suit to our specific needs. I dont see any ASP .NET project code available with the CKEditor download. Am i missing something, i have been going through and through the documentation with no luck. Please do explain.

MediaWiki

Wow. Great Job! I love the new interface and just besides it solves some smaller problems I had with the old version. Is there any plan to transfer the changes to the mediawiki + fckeditor project?

I think especially for small compagny or NPO wikis it would make wikis much more accessible for normal users!

We have plans to start a new MediaWiki effort, based on CKEditor. We would really like to have the definitive solution for it this time.

I'm not able to give dates for it though, but we're definitely talking about 2010.

We we have already something working but it's still too early to publish it. We're in touch with devs that know MediaWiki very well, so we should be able to provide relatively soon a solution that will satisfy all users that would like to have an easy to use RTE in MediaWiki (this will definitely happen this year, we have no ETA yet).

CKEditor & CKFinder integration

Hi, first of all, great tool!

I've been evaluating CKEditor alongwith CKFinder integration.

Question:

For my requirements, the CKEditor and CKFinder will have to be installed on 2 different servers (such is the requirement).

All I did was change the value of filebrowserBrowseUrl in ckeditor/config.js from /browser/browse.php to http://myserver.com/ckfinder/ckfinder.html.

When I click on "Browse Server" button in the Image Properties, I get a pop-up window, with this error:

Error: 'CKEDITOR' is null or not an object

Any suggestions will be of great help!

One day after I have updated few websites from FCKEditor to CKEditor i was hit by a big issue .. there is no image/file upload feature anymore :( .. If I can't find a way to add a plugin or something I will have to switch back to FCK .. this was the main reason I chosed FCK now ~2 years ago: It had an upload feature.

CKEditor and Firefox's built-in spell checker

I switched the bug tracking app I develop, BugTracker.NET, over to CKEditor a few months ago. It went smooth, no problems. Good job.

But...my users have asked about taking advantage of Firefox's built-in spell-checking rather than Spellcheck.NET. I've searched the forums and docs and can't figure out if that's possible or not. Is it?
